Open on the following holiday Mondays: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Spring Break Monday (check the NYC Dept. of Education calendar), and Memorial Day.

Focus: Art – of every form and from every era and area of the world. This is one of the world’s preeminent collections, housed in a majestic building on the edge of Central Park.

Appealing to kids: Among exhibits, the Egyptian and Arms and Armor galleries are probably the most visually interesting for young children. Overall, the museum is quite mature, but it does offer several tools for helping kids navigate and appreciate its immense collection, including Family Guides on popular exhibits, suggested itineraries, family audio guides, and free drop-in programs for children aged 18 months-12 years. The Children’s Reading Room provides a quiet space for reading, playing computer art games, and attending group storytime.

Admission: Adults $25; Seniors $17; Students $12; Members, Children under 12, and NYC Public School Students Free. Online ticket purchase available. Admission gives same-day entry to The Cloisters Museum and Gardens.

Stroller policy: Small or regular-sized strollers are permitted in most areas of the museum; oversized and jogging strollers are prohibited. The stroller accessible entrance is on 5th Ave. and E. 81st St. (this entrance also leads to the Children’s Reading Room.)

Elevators: Yes.

Changing table: Yes, in most restrooms. See this map.

Food & drink: There are four restaurants at the Met open to families with children (only the Great Hall Balcony Bar discourages children):

  • the cafeteria (Tues-Thurs 11:30AM-4:30PM, Fri 11:30AM-7PM, Sat 11AM-7PM, Sun 11AM-4:30PM), which has a kids’ menu as well as high chairs and booster seats
  • the Petrie Court Café and Wine Bar (Tues-Thurs 9:30AM-4:30PM, Fri-Sat 9:30AM-10PM, Sun 9:30AM-4:30PM, with afternoon tea beginning at 2:30PM)
  • the American Wing Café (Tues-Thurs 11AM-4:30PM, Fri 11AM-8:30PM, Sat 11AM-7PM, Sun 11AM-4:30PM)
  • the Roof Garden Café and Martini Bar (May-late fall, weather permitting: Tues-Thurs 10AM-4:30PM, Fri-Sat 10AM-8PM, Sun 10AM-4:30PM)

In addition, for museum members there are the Members Dining Room and Patrons Lounge.
