Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas
Focus: The oldest museum in New York City, dedicated to exploring its political, cultural, and social history.
Appealing to kids: While the museum does a nice job of offering special exhibitions that would interest children, such as Superheroes in Gotham and Madeline in New York, its main attraction for younger visitors is the Dimenna Children’s History Museum, open year-round, which uses interactive exhibits, displays, and games to present NYC history through the lives of a diverse group of youngsters who lived here from the late 17th through 20th centuries. The material is generally targeted towards older children from 8-13 years, but younger children can still enjoy the space and attend special events for their age group. Adjacent to Dimenna, the Children’s History Library is a quiet space with offerings for children of all ages, and those aged 9-12 also may join a monthly book club. The museum’s website includes a blog with activities tied to current exhibits and online games. Finally, the annual Holiday Express toy and train exhibition takes over much of the museum’s first floor at the end of the year.
Stroller policy: You may bring your stroller throughout the museum. There is a ramp at both the Central Park W. and 77th St. entrances. Also note there is a complimentary coat check.
Changing table: Yes, in the men’s and women’s restrooms on the lower level, first floor, and fourth floor.
Food & drink: Caffè Storico, an elegant yet family-friendly Italian restaurant, is located on the first floor.
Other kid-friendly amenities: Birthday parties are available for members at the Family Level, and are geared towards children age 5 and up.
