Playscape: A big, busy playground popular with neighborhood children and students from nearby schools. At the forefront is a large play structure flanked on two sides by picnic tables, benches, and chess tables, and by sprinklers on a third side. Towards the rear of the park are a smaller play structure, a sandbox, and an enclosed section with four bucket swings and four sling swings. There is plenty of open space, lined with benches and covered with trees. On the other side of a fence on the park’s eastern side is a cement turf with basketball and handball courts, a race track, an advanced climbing structure, benches, and chess tables.

Safety notes: This is a big playground with a lot of foot traffic (it is the second most visited park per square foot in the city), including area workers on their lunch breaks. There is only one gate for entry and exit, on E. 68th St.

Public restrooms: Yes, with changing table in the ladies’ room.

Food & drink: First Ave. abounds with restaurants and food shops.

Other info: The Friends of St. Catherine’s Park organizes events for children, including free story time, yoga classes, performances, and parties.
